Researchers published a study this week showing that when certain stem cells (the body's own repair crew) inside the air sacs of the lungs lose a key helper protein called βPIX, the lungs start scarring on their own. This matters because it tells us that keeping those repair cells healthy could be a way to slow or even prevent the scarring that makes breathing harder in IPF (a lung disease where scar tissue slowly replaces healthy lung tissue).

The AI tested many drug combinations this week. The best result kept lung capacity — called FVC, which is basically a measure of how much air your lungs can hold — at 98.3%. That is very close to normal. The combination used seven different drugs targeting the root causes of scarring. This is early computer modeling, not a treatment yet, but it points scientists toward the right targets.
