Researchers are working hard across many areas this week. One useful finding involves a blood test panel โ measuring proteins called KL-6, SAA, and YKL-40 โ that may help doctors spot lung damage earlier in people whose lungs are being affected by medical treatments. Earlier spotting means earlier help, which matters a lot for people living with IPF (a condition where the lungs slowly scar over time).
The AI system that tests drug combinations found a very promising result. The best combination of seven drugs kept lung capacity โ called FVC (basically, how much air your lungs can hold) โ at 94.7%. For context, healthy lungs sit around 100%, so 94.7% means the lungs are staying very close to full strength. The seven drugs in this combo target scarring, inflammation, and cell growth signals all at once.
One question to ask your lung doctor at your next visit: 'Are there any new combination treatment trials I might qualify for, and have you heard about drugs that target the FGF or YAP pathways in IPF?'
