This week, our team reviewed nearly 2,838 studies and 926 clinical trials (real tests of treatments on people) related to IPF. Most of the newest papers covered topics like cancer and heart disease, which often share biological pathways with IPF โ meaning discoveries there can sometimes lead to breakthroughs for lung scarring too. Researchers are also increasingly looking at how cells produce energy, because disrupted energy in lung cells seems to drive scarring.
The AI this week tested hundreds of drug combinations and found its best result yet: a seven-drug combination kept lung capacity (FVC โ basically, how much air your lungs can hold) at 94.7%. Healthy lungs sit at 100%, so 94.7% means very little loss โ that is genuinely exciting. The combo included drugs that calm overactive scar-forming signals and one that delivers growth factors (healing proteins) directly to the lungs.
