Researchers are working hard to understand IPF — a condition where the lungs slowly fill with scar tissue, making it harder to breathe. This week, the global database tracking IPF grew to over 2,600 studies and 899 clinical trials (real-world tests of treatments in people). Scientists are especially looking at how lung scarring connects to other conditions like heart disease and cancer, which may open new treatment doors.
The AI tested many drug combinations and found one standout result. Seven drugs used together kept lung capacity — called FVC (basically, how much air your lungs can hold) — at 94.7%. That is close to normal and much better than most single drugs achieve today. The drugs included nintedanib (already approved for IPF) plus newer experimental ones targeting scar-promoting signals in the body.
One question to ask your lung doctor at your next visit: "Are there any combination drug trials I might qualify for, and is my FVC being tracked regularly so we catch any changes early?"
