How do I know if I should get genetic testing for pulmonary fibrosis?

Who should consider testing
Genetic testing for pulmonary fibrosis is most relevant if you have familial PF (multiple family members affected), were diagnosed before age 50, or have other genetic conditions. Some people pursue it for family planning or to better understand disease progression. Talk with your doctor about whether testing makes sense for your situation.
What testing involves
Testing typically means a blood sample sent to a laboratory that looks for mutations in genes associated with PF, most commonly MUC5B and other genes linked to familial disease. Results come back in weeks. A positive result doesn't predict disease severity or speed.
Next steps after results
If you test positive, genetic counseling can help you understand what it means for your health and your relatives. If you're negative, it doesn't rule out PF or mean you won't pass it on. Discuss results with your pulmonologist to see if they change your monitoring or treatment approach.
